It would have been enough, however, to stoke Powell's imagination with visions of himself on his knees in that same place, digging up and classifying those fossils, breathing the ambient mountain air, filling in the continent's geological system.
I also owe a large debt to my capable research assistants, James Pritchard and Paul Witzel of the University of Kansas. Finally, a painful note about the dedication: as I was completing the revisions of this book, news came that Wallace Stegner had died in a Santa Fe hospital following an automobile accident. For me he was the most significant writer about the American West in this century, a visionary of tempered hope, a novelist and historian of eloquence and insight, a conservationist whose moral leadership deeply touched me as it did many others.

Within a year following his first exploring trip down the Colorado, Powell was in charge of a congressionally authorized and funded scientific survey of the mountain West, including Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah. He went exploring overland across the entire Colorado Plateau, down to Albuquerque, into Arizona and Nevada, meeting frequently with the native peoples of the area and learning their languages.
