2 The value of novel products may be grasped in this intuitive way by a culture as a whole, as when an artistic innovation takes hold of the popular consciousness; by a group, as when an innovation is acknowledged as valuable by the experts in a field; or even by an individual. The possibility of the last of these gives rise to the notion that artistic value is radically subjective, that the only criterion for evaluation of a work is that it is valuable to an individual. There are a number of puzzling phenomena with respect to the evaluation of works of art which seem to give support to this view that there is no objective basis for artistic value.

This view of the nature of artistic value can help to explain some of the phenomena surrounding the evaluation of works of art which are used to support the subjectivist position. One such phenomenon is the fact that artistic taste changes. Some works of art are assessed differently at different times and are more in favour at some periods than at others.
